Please help diagnose this noisy truck:

My wife just got a used '96 JGC limited. The truck is full time 4wd with a 5.2 motor.

The truck is comfy and rides great around town, but it has a whine on accel/decel. I'm no axle mechanic but I know that means gears too loose or too tight right?

I drove the truck last night and noticed that around 50mph any more than light throttle (but not enough to down shift) causes a rumble like rough pavement. Up a hill was worse.

I'm thinking rear diff/axle bearings. Does that sound right? Im going to open up the rear pumpkin and see what kind of party is going on in there. Any ideas or advice are welcome.

thanks
rdr

Have both differntials checked out ASAP. I had a frind with a similar era GC and the front pinion seal was leaking, then the pinion bearing went bye-bye....not pretty, and not cheap to repair.

Any rumbling/low grinding usually means one of the bearings is worn/shot. Any sign of leakage around the pinion shaft?

You are correct in the bearings are probably shot. Replace the bearings and seals, reuse the shims that are in there . I charge about 700.00 to rebearing a Dana 44.(Not including axle bearings.)

Well it ain't leaking. The fluids are all topped off. Gonna get some prices from our buddy who does rears to do the bearings etc and open them up ASAP.

The only good thing is if it gets too crazy the junkyards are chock full of 90s jeeps from when the USA had SUV fever in the Clinton years.

Thanks fellas.
