I use primer to try and make the engine kinda all one color. If you put to much paint on an engine over time the paint cracks and lifts. I use a very light coat of primer to get the engine all one color. It make all the cast iron parts a little lighter and all the sheet metal parts a little darker so it take much less engine color to get a good color on the engine without making the paint too thick.

Look in the picture...see how many dark colors there are. It would of taken 4 cans of paint to cover that thing. After a half of can of primer it only took 2 1/2 cans to get a good thick looking color with out the heavy build up of paint.

Well, as much as that sounds logical, I've never had any crack or lift or noticed any huge difference in the color of the various engine parts (mind you, no aluminum on mine). The factory never used primer.......

Hmmm; not sure why you guys are using primer? I've never used duplicolor, but I've painted all my engines with Plastikote Engine Enamel......had gas spilling all over the intake and valve covers without any paint issues.

I usually just paint a very light coat and then follow with another 2 coats while still tacky.....never had an issue.

Troy, that's a really good point and I'm not trying to criticise how you are doing it as it obviously works for ya.

OTOH, I DO actually find alot of the spray booth, base clear, hi end engine jobs to look......well, WRONG. My technique is neater than factory with better coverage, but if I get a chip or a ding in the paint, it's easy to touch up and if I don't you see the metal underneath......just like on the survivor 'Cuda sitting next to the 'Bee.
