Ok I just sprayed some primer on my 383 and it really doesn't say how long I need to wait to start spraying the hemi orange. So how long do you usually wait for the primer to dry until you paint the engine?

if the solvent smell is gone, it should be good to go. 12-24 hours is more than enough, if it's warm and somewhat dry where you're at. if not, find a hidden spot and touch it. if it doesnt leave your fingerprint, it's dry enough.

Dang that looks good... I've never had a problem if I put the top coat on within an hour of the primer coat.

If you used the Dupli-color primer, it should say on the can. Bought some the other day. If not, then

I just looked at this myself, the topcoat should be applied within an hour of the primer, if not then wait something like 7 days?
I will say this, with primer on bare iron , topcoated with the "Hemi Orange" and fuly cured. that paint is tough stuff! it's supposed to have some ceramic or something in it, and it holds up very well

i use dthe duplicolor on my slant, it seemed to be real durable once the engine was run. i used it on my dart and gas lifted it right up, but i didnt get to run it yet. i decided not to use it again after that. i went with the eastwood ceramic engine paint and the added activator, that is supposed to make it even more durable. primed it with epoxy primer, then a couple coats of the engine paint. it looked good, but the first jet change lifted it up anywhere gas touched it. i wont use that crap again. it chips easy too.

Hmmm; not sure why you guys are using primer? I've never used duplicolor, but I've painted all my engines with Plastikote Engine Enamel......had gas spilling all over the intake and valve covers without any paint issues.

I usually just paint a very light coat and then follow with another 2 coats while still tacky.....never had an issue.

I use primer to try and make the engine kinda all one color. If you put to much paint on an engine over time the paint cracks and lifts. I use a very light coat of primer to get the engine all one color. It make all the cast iron parts a little lighter and all the sheet metal parts a little darker so it take much less engine color to get a good color on the engine without making the paint too thick.

Look in the picture...see how many dark colors there are. It would of taken 4 cans of paint to cover that thing. After a half of can of primer it only took 2 1/2 cans to get a good thick looking color with out the heavy build up of paint.

Well, as much as that sounds logical, I've never had any crack or lift or noticed any huge difference in the color of the various engine parts (mind you, no aluminum on mine). The factory never used primer.......

Most of the time you only want/need to let the solvents flash off in the paints and want to re-caot while still a slight drag to the touch, but not wet.

I never got too excited over Duplicolor, but seems their new paint may be better.

Plasticoat is what I used when I wanted a nocer gloss on a cheap paint job. I almost always spray with a single stage PPG urethane on most of my customers, as it doesnt peel or lift, stay durable and glossy forever, and cleans with just the wipe of a rag, but it aint cheap.

Attached is the Plasticoat with primer underneath.

Troy, that's a really good point and I'm not trying to criticise how you are doing it as it obviously works for ya.

OTOH, I DO actually find alot of the spray booth, base clear, hi end engine jobs to look......well, WRONG. My technique is neater than factory with better coverage, but if I get a chip or a ding in the paint, it's easy to touch up and if I don't you see the metal underneath......just like on the survivor 'Cuda sitting next to the 'Bee.
