I have some high build primer and the hardener that's been in my garage for about 3 years now. Is there a shelf life for this? Someone told me once that the hardener could go bad.

if the primer has never been opened-it should be fine but i wouldn`t risk it on exterior paint work as a primer-the hardener-no way-get fresh stuff even if it`s unopened- my cousin is a painter and this i know.
all the best

I had a pint of hardener. was very careful to never let it mix with the clear --i.e. splashing while pouring it.

it sat on the shelf for 6 months. went to use it again and it was hard as a rock. apparently hardener will harden all by itself!

As soon as you crack the seal it's life is very limited but if the seal is unbroken if will last for years...

Yup, I use either Marhyde or Dupont urathane harder in acyrlic enamel and it will last 1-2 months after it's opened.

I also recently sprayed some lacquer that was 5+ years old, it seemed OK. I did truck wheels with some argent silver I had because I needed silver and kinda wanted to use it before it went bad. So it was still good at 5 years and this gallon had been opened. I think lacquer is easy to store?

Now I also have some PPG K-36 primer with hardner that is also 5 years old and it has never been opened. Hopefully I'll be able to answer your question next year when I plan to use it. lol

Lastly I also sprayed some Nason(Cheap junky Dupont) 2+ year old clear with the same age hardner and it came out fine. Both containers were open before.
So yea my hardner/catalist for my clear lasted 2+ years.

any catlist system really should not ever go bad as long as its in reasonable temps.
I had 5 gallons of dark green epoxy primer from my uncle which he used litterly in 1968 on his air base. and 2 years ago after some serious shaking up it worked like a charm and probably bullett proof.
I dont want to tell you the chems that were in its make up or the car s would be a superfund site.
depleated uranium oxide is one
and mercury peclorate/benzene was the fixer.
no we dont need no stinking respirators----LOL
but to be honest the stuff was also to aid in anti radar reflection-the particles would randomize the reflected enemry radat, really no diff then the new composite stealth if you know the technology
