okay I'm taking my gas tank out to clean it out now is it possible to take the tank off the car.With out taking the filler off or is it just going to be more trouble looks like i can just lower the tank and slide it sidways out.

you can slide it out---but get it as empty as you can and the car has to be far enough in the air for the tank to slide toward and under the differential-----pretty sure your gas filler sticks straight out the back like my 64----just did mine last week but i put a new tank in--- there will be one screw into the neck from inside the trunk too-bob
