I think I read that a single 3 1/2 pipe flows the same as a 2 1/2 dual setup?? Looks mean so far!!! TBF

Some random pics from yesterday's temporary engine/trans install, in preparation for fabricating the exhaust system. Can't do any more until my rear sump oil pan gets here. I have no idea what I'm going to hang the pipes to, or how. I'd prefer to mount them to the frame instead of the tub.

Hey Mark, Nick and I are heading out to Performance Only in Vero Beach on the 23rd to drop off the engine parts! If you are off that day and want to join us, let me know!

I did some work on a friend's AMX with a 390.

They're a very neat little motor.

I do recall putting in an oiling system that oils the front timing chain a little better. It's basically copper tubing that's plumbed in and crimped on the end to "drip" onto the chain. Simple concept but it works.

360's are good, 390's are better and 401's are badass!

I finished fabbing up the front half of the exhaust system. I'll drop it down later on today and weld it up.
I'll build the back half of the system when the engine and trans are in for good. For now though, the engine and trans need to get hoisted out of there today, because next week I'm taking all the engine parts down to Performance Only.

Nice, maybe a little tight, but probably no worse than some of the stuff in my shop. I was sitting here wondering how you were gonna do the front drive shaft anf it hit me, it's a YJ.

So far so good, cant wait to see the next update.

I'm really looking forward to the engine portion of this as I am very seriously contemplating a very similar build. Sould be a little torquer!

Great minds think alike.
They are the same 3-1/2" mufflers I used on my old Duster.

Thanks Rick. Having built just this small amount of exhaust, I already have gained a greater respect for anyone that builds their own set of headers.

Alright, the engine parts have been delivered to Dan at Performance Only. After the meet 'n greet, and bull session, we went out for lunch at a nice sports bar called Duffy's, and shot the breeze some more, talking about what will be done with the engine. In addition to the machine work and his usual brand of meticulous checking, correcting, and cam selection, Dan is also going to assemble the engine.
It was good to hang out with my friend Dan again. And, since Dan is the Allstate of the engine building world, I feel I'm "in good hands".

Not much actual progress to report. I've been buying lots of engine parts and having them shipped to Performance Only.
I finally got around to laying down some coats of epoxy primer on the fuel tank and transmission skid plates. I found an awesome, super tough, industrial-grade epoxy primer. Its made by Dupont, and its called Colar 2.1 ST. It is so thick, the label describes it as High Solids Epoxy Mastic. It can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed. It needs to be reduced 10-15% in order to spray it. Still, I had to use a gun with a 1.7mm tip in order for it to spray. I tried my 1.4, but that didn't work. Its designed to go on with a high film thickness, and it doesn't lay down smooth. It dries to a satin finish, and leaves a bit of a light texture, which looks good to me on the skid plates. The guy at the auto paint store told me this primer is used on offshore oil platforms, which is probably the harshest environment for coatings, so it should do a great job protecting my skid plates. Best of all, its relatively inexpensive.
