Ok guys heres the deal. Im getting ready to go racing again but i need some help. Ive got a 66 coronet with a 30 over 440,Eddy heads,292 purple shaft,10:1,850 dp, and 727 with a 340 converter. And G60 M&h's which are like 26 inches tall and a 4:30 gear. Ive run the car in the past with a 3:23 gear in full street trim and it ran 12.38 falling on its face coming out of 1st gear.....that was 7 years ago and has not been raced since. since then ive upgraded with a Quick Fuels technologys 850 dp,MSD 6 al,firecore wires,distributor,coil and wires.
With the 26 inch tall cheater M&H's do you think the 430 is gonna be too much gear or should i slap the 3:23 back in it. I drive it everywhere but i dont want to kill the motor either. So what do you guys think? Too much gear?............Joe

Street car with no overdrive ... TOO MUCH , unless you never do highway driving ...

4.30 and a 26" tire on the street! must be buzzin all the time! I run a 4.10 and 30" tire right now and it cruises pretty good!

To much even on the track. I run 4.30's but I use a 30" tall radial slick even on the street. I drive the highway all the time and I turn about 3200 to 3400 at 55 to 60 mph. I drive the 90 mile round trip to the track and race like that on the 30 x 9 slicks. I shift at 6200 and trap about 6400. With the 26" tires and 4.30's you will run out of steam before you hit the traps. And you will be turning about 4000 at 60 mph ! Ron

3.23 wont be enough on the track and the 4.30 with a 26 will be too much lol.

I am going to run 3.55 with a 28 inch tire on the street with the cuda I am building.

Anything above 2500 RPM at 60 mph with a 3 speed auto is annoying IMO.

Well i thought a 4:30 would be too much. I really liked it when i had the 3:23 gears in it cause i could cruise on the highway real nice and still run pretty good at the track. Im not looking to go into the 11's or anything like that. Just a good solid consistand low 12 would be just fine with me. Im not about to put a cage or anything else in the car. Still want to keep it a good crusing car also. Ive had the 4:30 in it for about 7 years but never raced it with that. fun around town but 55 is about it on the highway.......lol. The probelm is with my 66 i have no room to put bigger tires because of the wheelwell. I guess i put the 3:23 back in it. .Thanks guys.Joe

If you ran 12.38 before with a 340 converter, a swap to a better converter could about put you in the 11s. That 509 cam really needs 4000+ stall, IMO.
