This is a bump and a small update: remember guys, we are not going for KILL on these heads. They will be opened up some, for sure. And I may change the seat angle but Mark wants RELIABILITY FIRST!! That's why we are going the B1 and 540cid route. Easy HP without pushing the limits of every peice in the engine.
I mostly wanted to show guys what little effort in B1 heads can do for HP.
And these heads work on just about any cid!
I'm still on VACA. for another week, but I'm home now. Had some fun over in Huntington Beach, did some boogy bordin', with the family (all of us boogied) and got some nice rays
Thanks for the positive replies, hope that keeps with the entire post. And just so you guys know, I won't be arguing with anyone over this post, or anything pertaining to it...I'll just hit the ignore button

Brian

Finally got around to doing more to these B1 heads. I did very basic guide boss work, blended the ex seat into the chamber and bowl, more bowl work and some short turn work. I did not really do anything to the port yet.
Intake side, I blended the valve job in some to the bowl and chamber, guide boss work and short turn work as well. This is all very basic stuff, and netted some real flow:
lift int. ex.
200 170 126
300 254 172
400 315 219
500 357 253
600 382 275
650 391 291
After 650 lift, the intake port drops down to 378 and the air speed above the short turn is 420fps! Very fast. This is how I would leave the port for a smaller cid engine, like a 440-480 incher. Port speed at the pushrod at .500 lift went from 245fps to 270. With the intake on, the port speed at the port opening measured 312! But I haven't ported it yet so it's still small.
The intake did help the head pull to .800 lift, so you see once the intake is ported, the intake port should not stall, and velocity in the intake tract will be high considering the reputation these heads have for being big and slow...
This is all on a 4.350 bore, 28", and I used a 2 1/4 pipe on the ex.
Intake valve now has a 30° backcut.
I'll pour an intake port and the chamber tomorrow and post the cc's.

Hey Brian is there a speed you like to see at the different CFM levels and is that speed linear. Nice work.

It all depends on application. If your trying to speed the air up to compensate for something, like low compression then you do what you can to speed it up. I like to make the port as fast as possible, then slowly work on controling the air speed at the lifts that are important for the build.
This build, being a 540 peaking at 7000rpm, will need the air slowed alot more, and will need more cross section. But I wanted to show people that these heads that everyone says are slow and lazy are not...unless they are ported to be slow and lazy. Every person I've talked to about B1's has the notion that they need to be fully ported and have at least 500cid to use them....NONSENSE!
Infact, these heads can be used in quite a wide area from pump gas low compression engines, to smallish engines like 440's and also work good on 540's and up.
I just wanted people to see them up close, and personal and see what happens if you know how to make them work.
I'll post more pics and info after they are done for this project, so you can see the different stages.
Alot of guys chase that almighty flow # with these heads, and I'll bet the majority of these B1's floating around out there are over ported and under achievers. I'm not trying to start a wrestling match with anyone, so don't go there...I'm not claiming to be the guru of B1's, just trying to prove my point that these heads don't need a ton of work to make them perform.
Plus I think there are alot of tall tales and bad rumors about B1's and how they are very involved and super expensive. Well, they aren't cheap, but they will make more HP than 90% of the BB mopar heads out there so...you get what you pay for. Damn, I'm not even a dealer for B1's...
I will also show the steps needed to make these heads work, like the oil drains and pushrod clearancing that anyone with a die grinder and a bit can do.
Unless your name is Rob... No grinder for you Rob
LMAO

Great post to this point. Nice to see someone showing the potential of these heads and also debunking some of the old wives tales. Not to mention you have only scratched the surface of the potential they have

Ha Ha HA MOFO!

Nice work. Definitely a step or maybe a staircase above the "monkey with a die grinder" porting!

Here they are in their final form ready to be machined. All porting done. Flow #'s are on a 4.500 bore, 2 1/4 pipe on exhaust. Took the pushrod pinch out so that the cross section is the same or slightly bigger than the throat, and short turn is bigger than both.

Some guys wanted me to pour the intake runner...it measures 315cc. The chamber measures 74.5 cc with no milling yet. Yeah, I do alot of chamber work

After this, I'll post some pics of the oil drains we drill, and a little pushrod hole enlongating
Here's some flow #'s and some pics....

lift int. ex.
.200 170 130
.300 257 178
.400 318 230
.500 359 273
.600 383 298
.700 405 311
.800 416 317
