Anyone have the number of '69 GTX's they made and how many 4-speeds? The white books says about 15,600 or so total and about 4000 4-speeds. I really thought it was more like 25k+ '69 GTX's? What am I missing????

Mike, I got these numbers from Chrysler Historical in 1986:
9,862 440 automatic hardtops, 362 automatic converts
4,004 440 4 speed hardtops, 178 4 speed converts
14,406 Total
The numbers on the Hemi cars were mixed up. It looks like 98 426 automatics, (I think 98 but not clear?) 4 speeds with 6 automatic converts and 5 4 speed converts
On a side note, they reported (15) 440 RoadRunner automatic converts!!, no 4 speeds and no A12 converts. This was in their writing on a spread sheet I mailed to them asking for production figures on RR's and GTX's from 67-71

- 14,139 '70 Super Bees
- 6,874 '69 Coronet R/T's
- 2,391 '70 coronet R/T's

...they made over 6 times the number of '69 GTX's as they did '70 Coronet R/T's....

Yeah, that's a mistake.

On another note, I see a lot of numbers here. Some are being posed as total production but I'm guessing they're just cars destined for the US, while breakdowns by engines most likely are US-spec numbers and don't reflect total numbers.

Not when it comes to HEMI cars




They didnt have Cudas and Challengers in 69. More models offered in 70. Plus the Superbird production was 4 times the Daytona.

1969 saw the first appearance of the 'Cuda designation for a performance Barracuda package. A limited number of 440 Darts and Barracudas were produced. Car Life tested the 'Cuda 440 at 0-60 in 5.6 sec, and 14.0 @ 103 in the quarter mile. They were disappointed. It seemed that they just couldn't get the car to hook up. It kept spinning the tires. (Car Life, June/69). Another period road test, reprinted in Musclecar magazine, backs up the 14-flat quarters, but they also tried it with ten-inch slicks, and ran low 12s. Modern street tires are better than those slicks ...

Sure I can; I just did!


My point is/was twofold;
- 1) I was agreeing that R/T's are FAR more rare than GTX's
- 2) I was pointing out that 16,000 production isn't all that low in the Mopar world - hence the '70 numbers mentioned.

A Superbird is nothing more than a RR with an option package. Superbirds are not a different model. They have RR vins so there was not a net loss of RRs for every Superbird built.

I have always wondered why there were about twice as many GTX's made then R/Ts, about the same price I think and same drive trains.

I like both, only thing that makes sense is that people liked the looks of the Plymouth more. only reason I can come up with.

Its odd they made 16K 69 gtx's, and 44K 68 RR and at shows around here there is usually 3 or 4 69 gtx's for every 68rr and maybe 6 69rr to every 68. if that makes sense..

I have a feeling that people who bought RR's beat the crap out of them and people who bought GTX's were much more responsible drivers. I am sure that accounts for alot of it.
