I bought a new converter about 6 months ago and the postal people dropped the box and put a slight flat on the ring gear. Anyway, i managed to straighten most of it out but in the last 6 mths i've broken the nose off 2 mini starters. I dropped the trans out this week and it doesn't look too bad but i was going to have a new ring gear fitted. Just wondered if the starter should use a bushing in the bottom hole to keep it tighter to the ring gear.
Both times it broke, i was getting the screeching noise of the starter dog not engaging the ring gear correctly and had too turn the crank over to start the car. How critical is the alignment. Mick

The nose of the starter goes into a hole in the bell... if the ring gear wasnt meshing right it could shove it sideways/outward and break the nose...change the ring... the one bolt is a shoulder style bolt... or a shouldered stud... you could put a bushing on it

Thanks Mike, that's what i was hoping to hear, i'm sending it tomorrow and i've already made a little bushing, my bolt doesn't have a shoulder on it. Mick
