Guys,

I have a question. What is involved with making a 71/72 fender work on a 73/74 Charger?

I know the wheel openings are different but what else would be different/involved with making the earlier fender work on a 74/74 Charger?

Would this be a bolt on or are we talking major fabrication/modification here? My situation is I bought a set of NOS fenders for 73/74 Charger (for my 73 Charger). Body guys says one he had to modify a little bit in the grill area to make it line up.....otherwise he says they look identical....could this be a 71/72 fender?

Thanks!!

It's my understanding that the fender/door relationship will not match up.

If you look at the bottom of the door to fender crease they are different.

72s even same sidemarkers and same body lines and fitment are diff monsters than 73/74.

73/74s on a 71/72 will leave a big gap at radiator core support area. They don't meet.

front splash shield is totally diff for that reason.

beside that the wheel opening cut is higher on 73/74s, around an inch and a half.

one of the inner fender bolts ( the middle one I think ) won't meet.

however once mounted, from exterior its REALLY HARD to tell the difference.

Is it posible to fit ?... yes... with closed hood will be HARD to tell to any body the diff ( except if we talk about a 71 of course ), just if you have a calibrated eye to note the height diff on wheel opening.

when you open the hood will note something is weird

HOWEVER "grill area"? grill has nothing to do with fender, more than the headlights must meet with grille beams holes. Grille is attached to bumper, not fender

Bolt holes are also different when you open the hood. It might only be one bolt hole. I have a 74 with a 72 fender. I know it's different. Others would too if the hood was up. Inner fender area is different. SOme things don't line up. And don't plan on using chrome along the wheel lip.

Thnaks for the input guys! This fender seems funny to me as I seem to remember it having the 73/74 style side marker lense but from the fitment issues my body guys is having, the fender is a 71/72.

He said the front "stance" was different and the wheel moldings I have for 73/74 won't fit . Man, I thought I was lucky when I found a NOS set of 73 Charger fenders!!

Anybody here want to buy a NOS 71/72 Charger fender or know where I can find a decent 73/74 Charger fender??

1972 cars use the same generic side markers as '73-74. Most models starting in '72 used them. Only '71 cars have the inside side markers.

As said above the '72 would have a smaller wheel opening so that is probably what you have.

I seem to remember some talk about 15 years ago that fenders and bodies were slightly different from plant to plant and even though it was the same year and model there were subtle differences.
This was specific to Chargers.
Anyone else remember this?

There certainly could be some differences but the parts would have to interchange. I don't ever remember the dealer asking me where my Charger was built when I would go for parts.

Ok guys, here is anotjher question on the same thread. I have two fenders for this Charger.

1. The original fender which has the back edge of it(inner fender reinforcement) has rust in between it and the skin which my body guy says would not easy to deal with.

2. The other fender is the NOS fender I have this thread wrtten on which is in perfect shape but isn't correct.

The question here is...can we take the back edge -- the inner re-inforcement (see attachment) and take of the good from the NOS fender I have to make my original fender solid? Would this match up and look correct? Do you guys see any issues with this as far as fitment goes?

I hate to cut a NOS fender but I need a correct fender for my Charger which is near impossible to get in good shape. My original fender is in great shape except for that back edge. I am hoping my body man can fix the skin with sheet metal and then weld the re-inforcement back on.

Thoughts? Ideas on what I can do here?

Thanks as always guys for you invaluable input!

living in Cali, I would give a chance to get a nice fender set from a donor or junkyard on the far south west USA ( New Mexico, Arizona, Cali, etc... )

give some time to that. I bet you can get a good user for those NOS and good money for them to get the better replacements.

just my
