i have a really nice solid comp cam here on the shelf that will kick butt in my 440 BUT! the valve train that goes with it can get pricey for a guy like me right now... so... if it were to sell i would go with a 509 type hyd cam and HD mopar rockers to keep it CHEAP and simple. cant break adjusters and cant "have oiling problems" associated with the adjustables. ive talked with ultradyne several times and their 247/530 lobe would certainly replace the old MP cam. BUT! are the mp cams any good now? i know they had some issues... would you buy one now? i think it would be super cool to go 10's with the 509 cam in my A body.. i know its been done before but for a CHEAP guy like me it would really be an accomplishment. ive had no interest in this 250-256 530 540 108 clovis 10.7 125 cam so i can keep it and run my 1.5 rockers BUT im keeping all my options open! no headaches, stock stuff, goes with my cheaper shortblock... etc.. i can stay solid or go hyd and we are only talking 10.7 to 10.9 ET potential. the cams are vertually the same other that lash. the rpm limit is 6-6200 etheir cam... converter is going to TA for upgrades and stall change to WHATEVER rpm i tell them...??? if i were to buy a mopar performance purple cam where do i go? thanks gus

The cam you have will kill the MP .509. Just run it and quit going round-n-round.

The main thing with a flat tappet is to run a high zinc oil and break it in correctly... 2000+ RPM for 20 min. With that, I believe the MP cams are OK.

For lube I run Rotella T + STP. It has worked well, is available and cost effective. There are lots of other good oil solutions.

I'm drawn to the hyd because it gets away from the 200-500 rocker
Gear!

I don't know about the BB 509 but I've got a '70's MP 509 in my 340. We've run an 11.95 @ 111 mph in an A body, at 1700' DA. If you gots to change, I'm happy with mine.

Can you find a old set of Isky,Crane, etc iron adjustables? I'd use them with the hyd or solid cam with more than 300lbs open. Should be not a problem and not a lot of $$$$.

The solid springs are 130/325 psi. I had a set of iron rockers but
They were galled. I want to run 1.6s with the solid. I have some
Comp pro magnum knock offs 1.5s for this cam but then it's net 500 lift
509/ net500 6 onone half dozen on other...

Well the factory rockers could be repaired. Don't worry about the lower rocker ratio it won't cripple this combo. Those springs will work with the hyd cam as well.

I know the solid would be a lil faster but the no headaches of non
Adjustable rockers is very inticing ! I think that UD 247/530 lobe
With custom centerlines has to run better than the Mopar cam but I
Would run the MP cam if the quality was there... That was part of
My original question- would you buy one today?

Is Harold back in business or did you actually talk to Bullet cams about a cam with UD lobes?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

As far as I know Bullet/UD are the same. Tim has told me it is a ultradyne
Cam. I'd really like to get a cam from them. I've called several times
Kicking tires and they are super nice!! Can't say enough about their
Customer service!

Harold still designs and sells cams from his house. Tim was Harold's right hand man for years and Bullet has the older UD cams.

Yea, I know all that but when he said he has talked to Ultradyne I thought maybe Harold had started UD back up. Guess not.

So why does Harold let them use the name? Sold the rights maybe?
As long as th NF lobes are still available that's all that matters in
Chrysler flat tappet terms

Comp cams sells a version of the 509. I think they call it a Vintage series cam - Not sure! I am in the middle of building a new motor for my street car so it just got removed. It seemed to work well. My original Mopar 509 went to a buddy that put it in a stock low low compression 440 that is in his dart. It has ran low 11's in 4000 feet air. I have always liked them and in most street cars they sound rank. Are there better designs out there today - YUP!! However, I have never been into chasing ultimate ET. Last I looked I don't own a Pro Stock car.
