Guys I have been thinking of going with a 400 block stroker. Originally I was gonna say a 451 but I have been seeing info stating they can produce between 600-700 hp. Is this true and if it is what size displacement would most likely be required to get those kind of numbers?

The most popular displacements are 505 and 512. The "package" will determine the final power output but those numbers you're stating are easily achievable with the right parts combo - and not a whole lot of money either!

Really? If you go with a high displacement on the 400 stroker will you have to go with an external oiling system like with the 440? I might go with the 505 if I can get the right performance from it.

Up to 4.25" stroke/512 ci minor clearancing only is normally neaded for internal oiling.

The pickup boss is the main area that may need a little die grinder attention. The 4.25" stroke with 2.2" chevy rod journals is supposed to be easier to fit than the 4.125" with Mopar journals that I am running. Plan to stick with a 3/8" pickup. With a decent pan and basic clean up of the oil passages it works fine up to at least 6500 RPM.

You should have no problem getting 600 HP with a 451, A good set of heads like EZs with a max window, 620-640 lift solid or roller, 12.1 compression, Good intake & at least a 1050 carb, 2.25 in. headers or possibly a TR, do all the necessary oiling mods to the crank/block.

I had close to 500 HP on my 451 with ross FTs, iron heads & a small solid, The guy i sold it to made a few changes & started shifted it at 67-6800 & it trapped over 7K with no issues, this was on stock 440 rods with ARP wavelock bolts & stock forged crank, The engine already had a good 250 passes on it just from me, it just recently lost compression in 3 cylinders from tired rings & i built it back in Feb. 04, no spun bearings or rods through the block, I say go with a 451 you'll love it

A trans builder i knew in Amarillo had a 73 Swinger, built up a 451 with B1s if memory serves me, had a big ass cam & the works, The Alt. was 3700 ft. at our track, he ran 10.teens in that car & drove it on the street, it was a 9.5 car at or around sea level easy, he had the fancy oiling system on his & all was good, I know for sure it had over 600 HP & he had a stock 400 block, the 230 casting.

What if I use a set of ported stealth heads and go with 11.1 compression what kind of numbers would I be looking at then? I already have the stealths and I wanna run pumped gas. I found a 400 motor for sale. I already have the 440 rods and the stock forged crank. I will just need a good set of pistons and my machine guy to do a port job for me.

Is that at the wheels or at the crank? I kinda want at least 450 at the wheels. I know alot of hp is lost in the drive train.

At the crank. What is the loss percentage to the wheels? Don't know, but probably 20% would be a minimum, I imagine...

Thats most likely at the crank, I'm sure you can get around 560-570 FWHP with the stealths, that'll be close to 500 at the wheels (maybe around 480).

I'd look into a 620 lift. cam, The Indy dualplane from what i've heard is a great intake, A 1050 Dom. & at least a 2" header.

Ok that would work so I can simply go with a 451 kit and get those results, I think I have my blueprint.

You haven't mentioned whether this is a street or strip engine - which would affect the build. Personally I would opt for the bigger cubes and avoid the high compression. And for your HP target I'd avoid the stock rods and crank like the plague!

Its a street engine that may never hit the track. The bigger cubes would be nice but I keep hearing the 451 is more powerful. If I buy the kit from the source I would most likely want a bigger kit more like a 470 or bigger.

I mean stronger, not more powerful. I also have been told it can reved higher and with stock rod length would be longer lasting aswell.

The three most deadly words when used about the Internet, "I have heard".

There is no replacement for displacement, except a blower.

Chuck Senatore said the word, "Build the biggest shortblock you can afford".

Your name is "torqueaddict". Torque is directly related to cubic inches.

More's law: If some is good, more's better and too much is just right.

Get the picture?

Build the 4.25" stroker using the Chevy rods. Reciprocationg and rotating weight will be down. The engine will rev like a smallblock. B/RB engines have so high a deck that worrying about rod length and longevity is a complete waste of time.

For compression I would go no higher than 11:1 with plenty of squish, using zero deck pistons with the Stealth heads.

It should be easy as falling out of bed to get 600hp from this combo with a little work on the heads.

R.

Friend ran a 451 and did 12.30's in the qtr...70 charger....10 to 1 pistons..not too shabby

Revving a motor when you don't have to is asking for trouble. Biuld a big-inch thumper with enough torque that you don't need a huge gear or ridiculous converter. Pick the piston carefully such that you have reasonable compression but you can machine for quench. Forget about HP numbers - since they're a function of torque and RPM you won't see the HP numbers you're looking for till the motor is revved higher than you'd want in a street motor (700 hp at 7000 rpm ain't worth squat if it doesn't have the torque to pull away from a stop sign). Focus on torque - a 500 HP motor with 500 ft/lb of torque at 2000 rpm is a killer street motor.

What's a good cam recommendation for buku torque down low for a strictly street motor and that heavy car ?

Depends on your wallet ... hydraulic, solid or roller ????
