FINALLY got a break from truck break-downs,and trying to sell our house! If I didn't use the calculator and average the 4 runs each with these 2 carbs...I wouldn't believe it! Not sure what the DA was at the track(Ubly)yesterday...but it was HOT and humid! When we started running @ 1:15 it was 85 degrees, and 90 degrees on the final run at 5:30. Since there weren't a lot of cars for the T&T session..and my car was running cool...only 170-175* after each 1st run,I hot-lapped it 4 times, for 8 total runs. Never went over 185 degrees all day! ***RESULTS*** Holley 950HP- Avg. from 4 runs..60' 1.67...E.T..11.53...MPH..116.5 Race Demon RS- 4 run avg.- 60' 1.69...E.T..11.51...MPH..117! I'd definately call it a DRAW! BOTH carbs worked well! I attribute the lousy 60' times to NO starting line prep! Didn't see them spray at all! I would be happy to own either one of these carbs! Thanks to Brad Haak, for the use of the Race Demon...and Russ Dudek, for the use of his Bigs 950HP Holley!

BIG HELLO to my 2 favorite Mike's! Raff...yes I jetted up 4 on the primaries only...both carbs. Didn't change the MPH at all on the Demon. Went from 78 to 82. Went from 80 to 84 on the Holley...picked up 2 mph! Still can't believe how darn close these carbs performed on my car! It was HOT...but felt GREAT to do some SMOKY burn-outs and run the 1/4 again! Since Drag Times has no Ubly listing to figure the DA,I had to take data from Lapeer Dragway..the closest track. The average DA there from 1:00 to 5:30 was 2955. They're saying my corrected times would be 11.23 @ 121. I'll take it!

Nice to hear you got the car out as planned

Sure seems like the carbs were both in the ballpark!

Good job Randy. I hope you guys had a good time. It MIGHT take a seasoned pro to eek a 10.XXX out of it but, I think it'll get there with minimal changes. The free or cheap tweaking is gonna net the biggest gains now. Props to the people who have offered their parts and help. I'm sure either carb will work for you, most people are more familiar with the Holley's. You've done well to document all the incrementals and weather.

Thanks, fella's! Mick..no PV in the Holley secondary block...4.5 in the primary. Randy..ya' got an SV-1 to send to me?...I'll try it out! Zippy...looks like the carb tweaking here at home worked out pretty well!...couldn't get 2 carbs to run pretty much identical numbers like that again!...IMHO! Thanks for the kind words,Sean! When you comin' to Memphis for that "Magical tweak session"??? I honestly don't believe I'll see a 10 second slip until the Eddy's get ported!...hopefully this winter!

Good results and they are real close et wise but agree a little tweeking may favor one over the other. How did you get your water temps down in that weather?

Thanks,Dom! Like I stated, couldn't get 2 carbs to run any closer than those did! As far as the X running so cool...I run a 7-blade aluminum clutch fan,3-core aluminum radiator, and good ole' Water Wetter! I swear by that stuff! Been using it with great results for years!

Thanks,Doug! I can't afford to lose 5 more pounds! I'm skinny enough as it is! I actually have to wear belts with ALL my pants and shorts now! I'm sure that'll be changing SOON! I hope you get to feeling better soon! Nobody said getting older is for wimps!!! Take care,my friend! Randy B.

Thanks,Teddy! Despite the heat,I had a BLAST! ALWAYS good to get some seat time in the ole' car! I won't run again until it cools off...75* or cooler! I don't take the heat and humidity like I use to! Maybe just another getting older deal! Take care..and GOOD LUCK with the heat this week-end!

Not trying to break stones, but without trying to maximize fuel and timing for each carb, I don't see where anything was learned.

Steff...no offense taken, but I wasn't going to get that specific with the jetting on a 90 degree day. My timing is set at 38* total...where it makes the most power..and still starts easily. Something actually was learned...that BOTH carbs worked well,at the track..and on the street! Brad had no idea if his Demon was even going to work, since he had to make more than one repair on it,after purchasing it used. Now,at least he knows it'll be serviceable on his Challenger, when it's back together and running! BTW...met your friend Brent, and his girlfriend/wife..Denise? Real nice couple! Wonder what her best time of the day was with their '69' RoadRunner? Maybe he'll chime in if he reads this!

Hi,Tex! According to Brad, the BG was sleeved to flow 980cfm. It has the Blue sleeves installed. Randy

Randy,
so would you say the BG was bigger/flowed more than the Holley ?
just trying to correlate it to my experiences re finding where the motor simply cannot use more air/bigger carb

Tex,I believe both carbs flowed around 970-980cfm,from information given to me by both Russ, and Brad. I think my heads are the limiting factor using bigger carbs. If..and when I get the Eddy's ported, they can utilize the bigger air flow, and produce more power, and MPH!

So what about on the street Randy, I'm still looking to make a move from the MD-850 and it's wonderful idle qualities....

Doug...don't remind me! I know all about MD-850's...and DIRTY PLUGS! I'd go with a 950HP! Idles clean..very responsive off-idle qualities..and make good mid-range,and top end power! Works for me!

Glad you got out and had some fun.

I think the carb is actually 870 cfm. It has the 1.375 venturi.

Hard to believe that it would want that much jet.

Hi,Russ! 115 to 117mph on that 80 to 84 jet change! I'm surprised it picked up with that big of a jet increase...in that heat and humidity! Plugs looked real good,as well! Who knows..maybe if I jetted the secondaries as well, maybe it would have gone faster?!! I won't be back out to the track until it cools off to at least 75 degrees. I hate racing in this hot, muggy stuff! But...gotta admit,it was a BLAST to run the old car down the track again!

I stand corrected on the Holley's air flow! According to the owner,Russ Dudek,it flows 870 cfm! Sorry for the wrong numbers,Tex!

thanks Randy.
just shows what your motor wants, similar to my experience
my 440 needed more than a ultra hp950,loves my bg 825(bigger),didn't gain with a prosystems hp1000 based carb(biggest).
my heads and cam are the restriction.cam will change - not the heads
can't / won't step up to the 10.0's - too many extra regs and rules
you have a great looking GTX

Thanks,Tex! Even though I'm shooting for a 10.xx...don't want to run 10's consistently....for the reasons you stated! Even if I run a 10.999 just ONCE...to say I did it in my street car,I'll be a "Happy Camper"! Randy B.

Randy
I run a stock 950 hp, last time our in 90 degree weather, i had 84 in the back no pv and 76 in the front, that was with open headers and 18" collector extensions. Car was nearly 2/10 off my best but still managed over 128 mph, also with the new tubular control arms it was hitting the tyres a lot harder making it spin.
On the chassis dyno last year it liked 76 front and back with pv's and full exhaust but ran pb with 2 sizes up.

Happy Birthday,Mick! Thanks for the info! Next time out to the track...when it's considerably cooler,I'll do a lot of tweaking,as far as jets sizes go. I'm still surprised it picked up 2 mph, going up 4 sizes...and in the heat! Have a good day! Randy B.

Hi Randy,
Nice meeting you out at Ubly Sat. Denise spent the day getting comfortable with her RR, which was the whole point of the trip. It had been nearly 10 years since her last run down the track, plus we wanted to be sure I remembered to tighten all the bolts! once we were convinced, and she got comfortable, she did great, the times, not so much. Time to start tuning. Best of the day was 14.42 @ 93. Should be able to tune about a second out of it, plus get some more with better air. This motor was never planned to be permanent, just kept it to get her in the groove of racing again. Will spend the rest of this year playing, then put something a little faster in it over the winter. Hope to see you out there again! Brent

Brent..Thanks for stopping by to introduce yourself and Denise! Glad she got some seat time..especially after 10 years! Sorry I never made it over to your pit area,I was pretty busy with carb, and jet changes between my hot-lap runs. What kind of goodies do you have in the 440? I might be able to help with a spare manifold or two,if they're an improvement over what you already have. Let me know! My next time out most likely won't be until Milan Mopar Day,the saturday before Labor Day. Hope the temps are moderate then...75* or cooler! Take care, and keep getting her out and having some fun! Let me know about your intake situation!

Thanks,Sheriff!..uh,Mick! I've had a LOT of fun...and met a lot of good people, because of the ole' GTX! I have been wanting to paint it a dark red for years, but the funding has been hard to come by! Maybe I'll hit the lottery one of these years! All in all,if I didn't have the X to tinker with...I'd be BORED TO DEATH! Take care,my friend! Randy B.

No. We'll be up the first week in August. A few years ago we came up about this time of year. Had to get off at Telegraph as they were working on I-75. It was about midnight when we hit Taylor, I believe, and there was a really big cruise going on. Guys cruisin with slicks, burnouts going on regularly, people lining the street partying, for miles, most parking lots full of cars and people. My kids have never seen anything like it and thought it was cool. We've done the MtClemens thing a few years ago, but it was nothing like the Taylor thing

Russ...must have been the Telegraph Cruise, which I've never been to! They do tend to get quite a bit CRAZIER on the west side! NO WAY would the east side municipalities let a cruise carry on at midnight! Taylor has ALWAYS been a little on the WILD SIDE!...gotta LOVE it!

The Demon is set up w/ 1.425" sleeves in their "825" config, although BG stated back when the Gold Claws were released originally that this configuration flowed 980 cfm @ 1.5" (standard 4-bbl rating pressure). I picked it up from a board vendor a couple of years ago as a "race ready" low-use piece, which turned out to have been a bit effed up and required some parts to be sent back to BG to be fixed.

Since Randy wasn't sure what type of carb he wanted to run w/ his GTX, I offered to let him test w/ it. I'd set it up for the expected conditions based on his input and IIRC the only thing he changed was going from .035 to .040 squirter size.

Randy - I never asked you if the Bigs "950" is an original Holley 80496 tuned by Bigs (1.375" venturi) or one of the carbs they sell w/ the Proform "950" main body that has a 1.450" venturi. Do you know?

FWIW, here's the specs on the Demon. There are some key differences from how this model came from BG, if you have the stock specs to compare against.

Pri jet - 78
Sec jet - 88
PV - 3.5
Pri & Sec nozzles - .035 w/ hi-flow screws (Randy changed to .040)
IFR - .035
IAB - .070
MAB - .026

I installed a .213" bleed jet in the baseplate, which is about the same area as having drilled the butterflies w/ .110" holes.

Emulsion circuits in the metering blocks: .028 / plugged / .028 / plugged / plugged

Idle mixture adjustments were 1.5 turns out on the primary side and slightly more than 1 full turn out on the secondary; IIRC, Randy opened up the secondaries to 1.5, also.
