I saw a post here a few weeks ago on A-body rears and now I can't find it.

Anyway, how can I tell what year rear I have (it's not original to the car) so that I get the right brake lines for it?

the ring gear will have the yr and gear ratio stamped in it.

as far as a housing goes, check the BOM stamp on the housing.

ar you sure it is an A-body housing?

maybe a B-body housing?

maybe a cut down housing?

may be best to ben up you own lines for it,I did when I had a c-body housing cut down to A-body specs.

do you already have the brake line T that bolts where the vent is?

i forget if some years this was separate from the soft line for the rear, or if it was part of it.

also what rear brakes are you running? stock small bolt pattern?

if you are going all stock * I think * you can order the flex line, T, and lines for any 67-72 a body

The 66-69 housing has a different location than the 70-up housing. I do not have info handy but will later today unless someone else chimes in while I am gone.

It's an original A-Body rear with the small bolt pattern 9" drums. All of the old lines are still on it, so I can get pics/details when I get home tonight.

3.23 sure grip 741 case.

The spot where the brake tee is held in place is closer tothe pumpkin on one vs the other , you may want to get the correct lines for your year and move the hole if necessary so you flex line from the body tot he rear is not over stressed should you have the wrong year housing , I had to do this when installing the later rear in a 67 barracuda convert I did some work on. The hole is 7/16 fine thread , I just red loctited a set screw into the other hole .

I'll try and look at the rears I have tonight , I think the rear you have is the later one though. When I drilled the rear i did I used the replacenet hard lines to the wheels as my guide for the hole I drilled.

Well, I went out to Carlisle and got the 70 up brake lines. Nope, don't fit. Looks like I do have the earlier one.

The lines on there look fine but if you must you must. Still why not use a tape measure and bend your own?

Sorry Eric , I dropped the ball on this , the good thing is they will exchange them. I would put the proper lines on it so you know it's going to clear exhaust and the line will be correct from rear to body , I'll look at the late rear I have tonight .

The "block"?
If you mean the T where the main line splits to run to each wheel cylinder.....Thats a tough one. ALL a body 8 3/4 axles were small bolt pattern. They went out of production in summer 1972. The first of the large bolt pattern A body cars were the 73 models.

No it changed in 1970 , as stated there were no A body large bolt pattern rears except maybe on the 68 SS cars .

I have a 70 up rear apart in the basement, the bolt hole for the Tee is approx. 15.75" from the surface the backing plate bolts to.

Erik , the rear you have is definitely the early rear ... sorry

The A-body housing pictured in this thread is a pre '70 unit. The vent bolt is located a couple inches farther down the tube on the newer version.

The newer housings also used a "V" shaped brake line tee.
