If anyone remembers my WIW post on the '66 Hemi Coronet Sedan last fall, I got the car today. My question is on the fender tag. Would this have come on this car? I compared it to a '65 tag that I have, they are the same size, shape, etc. My car has no SO # on the radiator support, I have not looked behind the bumper yet. It also appears to not have any seam sealer or undercoating. Could this be why it has a special order tag? The car has been a race car since day one and was ordered by the original owner for that purpose.

Got my answer today from the original owner. The car was used by Chrysler Product Planning/Engineering and he picked it up from them. He remembered the tag and said it was definitely the original.

So, what's the deal on this car? Does it have a low VIN number or anything else unusual?

Interesting stuff.

What time frame (dates) are we talking here?

It's an old race car. It has the leafs moved in, original interior has been sprayed black. Untouched otherwise. I haven't tore it apart yet. St Louis car, Vin is WE21H67308XX. 464.5 miles showing on the odometer and title. I'm the fifth owner.

Not sure right now. I am sending for the IBM card and etc. I was at work when he returned my call and could not talk much. I will be calling him back for more info.

You are missing a digit have you checked with Chrysler Historical to see if they have an IBM card for it?

Did St. Louis make it to 308XXX for VIN sequence in '66? What kind of date codes are you finding on components that appear original to the car?

Haha, I am. Here's the tag. I have not checked for any date codes yet.

312154 is the highest VIN I have on file for this plant / model year so far.

For the OP, the special order fender tags are common to newer police cars, but even then the normal option tag would be on the car also.

Have you searched it for broadcast sheets yet?

On the sheet, the only place it could be is in the headliner. The seats are gone, nothing under the dash. The car has two '67 style buckets in it.

Have you checked them for sheets?

A late '66 car coming with 1967 style seats would not be a big surprise to me.

The car was picked up from Chrysler with a bench. The buckets were added later.

I'm not ready to accept that tag as the original regardless of the previous owners comments, 50 years can fog even the best memories. As mentioned, it appears to be a mid 70's piece that someone added to the car. It would be interesting to see the entire VIN and a copy of the Certicard, either might lead to some credence to the fender tag being original but it's not very likely.

I thought a 1970's piece as well. When I asked the first owner if he remembered fender tag though, he said that it said "Special Order" before I could say anything else.

It doesn't matter to me either way. None of my other cars have a tag and this is going to continue life as a race car.

I would say it never left the factory that way. Reason is every special order tag I've ever seen will be the same style as the original tag and this one is not. See picture below which is from a 67 Fury cop car:
