Can somebody please tell me how I know where #1 is on my MSD distibutor? I am ready to fire the engine but can't figure out where #1 is on the distibutor.

Thanks

Pull your #1 pulg. Put your finger over the hole and bump the motor over until it blows your finger off the hole. If your timing mark is at or close TDC look at where your rotor is pointing and that will either be #1 or 180* out. Wire your distributor Counter clock wise 18436572 starting with the terminal the rotor is pointing at. Then try to start. If it pops oiut the carb then lift the distrib up enoungh to move the rotor 180* and you should be good. You determine where #1 is. The distributor doesn't care where on the cap #1 is.

If it blows your finger off the hole then the rotor will be pointing approximately to #1. Wire #1 lined up with the rotor and it will NOT be 180 out. But you can flip the distributor 180 if you would like #1 to be on the other side of the cap.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I positioned mine on my 383 where the wire routing would look best.

Hook a timing light up to your #1 wire and see what your timing is. Got fuel, got spark, got compressuion?

when it blows your finger off the hole then slightly turn the crank to where the timing marks are at 10 BTDC then turn dist until a reluctor tip is even with the magnet but a hair past(the reluctor tip is JUST moving away from being centered with the magnet).Snug the dist down at that point just enough so you can turn it by hand but it wont move on it's own. route the wires CCW as mentioned from where the rotor is at.

Put your finger over the number one plug hole and bump the starter relay till you start to feel compression coming out, stop and finish bring the piston to about 5 degrees before TDC. install the intermediate shaft with the slot as parallel to the engine center line as possible and then but the distributor in taking note of where the rotor is pointing. The install the cap making sure to install the wire for number one in the terminal that the rotor is pointing to and following the firing order around the cap counter clockwise on a b/rb engine. Not a hard or trick job.
