I'm working on my brother's car which is a '70 Challenger. It had the incorrect rear axle housing in it and since we had a correct one in our spare parts I decided to install it for him and rebuild the rear brakes. Today I was installing the carrier into the correct housing when one of the studs that holds the carrier stripped out. It just turns and turns. These studs are similar to wheel studs but of course a different size. I guess I have to take it back apart. Ugg. I spent a lot of time cleaning up the old gasket. Can I buy these studs new somewhere? Or do I need a whole new housing? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Not sure on the part # but I'm sure one is avail or maybe could JB weld it but it might not leak at all as the gasket seals the grease from moving from the inside to the outside & prob enough gasket area between the outer edge of the stud/hole and the outside edge to seal esp if the offender is high up above the fluid level. I'd try it as is

I have used axle retainer studs if I remember right. The ones that hold the retainer to the housing and backing plate.

These are the studs that hold the carrier (center section) to the housing. I went back outside to determine if the threads on the stud were bad or the stud was spinning inside the housing. It's the threads. Maybe they were bad from the get go because I didn't force the nut on. It went on nice and easy. Then I took the center section back out and was easily able to get the stud out. Now the my only problem is getting the correct stud and nut. Year One doesn't have them. I will try a "real" auto parts store tomorrow and if not maybe I'll give Randy's ring and pinion a call. Thanks for the reply's.

I would take the stud to a good hardware store (Ace, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.). They usually have a large selection of fasteners. I have found many a bolt, stud, etc. that I couldn't find anywhere else.

they hammer out and have a shoulder to bit the housing just like a wheel stud in an axle flange

get them from moser for a set cheap, come in packs of 10

did mine when i set it up,I used a small stack of washers and the air ratchet to pull them in all the way first then droped the chunk in.

the ones for the backing plates have a T shape thats flat on one side to fit in the end cap on axle tub..i would not use that on the punkin myself as its not were it goes

they can be had cheap from moser also

may try Doctor Diff here on the board for them

dont forget to doll it up for your bro either

What is the rear you removed from the car? The studs that hold the backing plates and axles to the housing are the same and you could pop one of those from the other axle .

Thanks a lot for the reply's. I had already thought of taking one off of the other rear but I assume these studs are like wheel studs where they should only be used once. I will try the local hardware store because I would really like to install this rear today but if they don't have it I will call Moser.

Hey scratchnfotraction, that is a really cool idea. I've never seen a 8.75 painted up like that before. Looks good!

Thanks again guys.
