I'm sure this has been talked about before...but what oil are you using for big blocks? High zinc, added Molly - what brand do you like?

Shell Rotella T 15/40, Valvoline 15/40, Delo 15/40 over the years. They still have 1200 or more ppm zinc.

Most oils, including diesel, have been lowering thier zinc content and it's not easy to keep up or find current numbers. They have diesel oil specifically for 2007 & newer diesels with low zinc because zinc doesn't get along well with the newer catalytic converters.

Find CURRENT numbers or call the manufacturer.

Amsoil has a wide selection of high zinc diesel and car engine oils that offer benefits in addition to their higher zinc content. I use the 5w-20 Dominator in my race car.

Amsoil high zinc selection

Amsoil source and info.

Grab the August 2011 issue of Car Craft. They talk about this specifically. Lucas Break in sae30 has 6,427 ppm where brad penn is at 1,073. The second highest was Joe gibbs break in at 2.669. They sent each oil out for analysis from an independent company. They recomend around 1,200 minimum for break in.

I run EDM lifters as well, so I really don't care how much zinc is or isn't in the oil...

I'm currently running the Summit brand racing oil. There's plenty of options these days.

...i agree,Amsoil appears to be the best... 10 w 40 is 1440 ppm
most of us only change the oil in our Musclecar once a year so spend 40 bucks and go with the good stuff!

I'll throw one in for Royal Purple. I have a small block with a flat tappet and it does fine FWIW.

Valvoline racing oil here also with EDM lifters. I also add a bottle of comp eng oil break in when I change my oil. I just broke the cam in on my new 493 motor on Saturday. Ron

That's what I have been running lately, good ol' Quaker Sludge! I do add a bottle of 'ZDDP Plus' to boost the zinc/phos up. No Fram for me, I run a Wix 51515 from the group buy.
Last year I picked up 10 - 5gal jugs when they were $10, now they are $11.50.

This oil has the needed zinc already in it:

http://www.full-synthetic.com/Product_Pages/Classic_Car_Synthetic_Motor_Oil.html

Not to be used for break-in.

has a small hole drill in the flat bottom that slides on the cam lobe

it oils the lifter/cam lobe so it rides on a thin film of oil to reduce wear.

I feel the faster the ramp speed/the higher spring pressures an EDM lifter is cheap insurance. I suppose using them on a purple shaft-type cam could also give someone peace of mind.
