Has anyone ever had issues with the valve guides? A buddy of mine has these heads on a 383 with 1.6 rockers and a hyd. cam. His lift is right at .600" of lift. He used the springs that came with the heads with the upgraded retainers and locks. After 20 passes the valve guides were pounded down the valve stems.

Were the retainers hitting the guides?

The machinest he took them to for repair thinks the valves were floating and the retainers hit the guides. The valve float seems odd because the engine has never seen 6500 rpm yet.

I live with fear everyday but, sometimes she lets me race!

why go to the expense of a solid roller cam and run an ootb head?

My goal was to run low to mid tens with an all new car, motor combo. I also didn't know what the car was going to weigh when I was finished with it. I had thought the car would weigh about 300lbs less than it does, it weighs 3380 with me in it. While I removed a lot of weight, I also added a lot of steel with a 14pt cage which is unnecessary for the class, but gives me some peace of mind for it's extra protection.

Back to the heads, I didn't want to overshoot my goal and wind up in the 9s, so I tried the combo with OOTB ports to see where I was at. Turns out the ported heads would have probably got me right down into the 10.0s

This is definitely a low rpm package with the OOTB heads I shift at 5500 and go through the traps at 6200. I'm running 3.73 gears and 29.5" slicks.

No regrets though. I've been having a lot of fun with the car as it is. Hopping into a 10 second car after being out of the sport for 25 years was definitely a rush
