Ok Ugly for sure. A friend called last night and said that he was looking at an 81 LeBaron convertible with turbo engine. He said the top has a hole in it and the valvecover leaks but the body looks solid and he can get it for under $1000. He's going to put it up on a rack in a few days to take a look underneath. Anything he should be aware of? Any common gotcha's that would be a deal killer? He's not looking to restore it. Just wants a driver with a top that goes down.

It must be newer than an 81. A Lebaron was a M body back then.

It's not an 81 if its a convertible with a turbo. The 81 was still on the F/M/J platform. Must be a k-car

Even if an 82, if it spent it's days in Ohio, it should be a rusty turd. Even if it was kept out of elements, it might be nothing but trouble.

Ahem....what was THAT again 'bout looking a little rough??? LOL

As the other guys stated...the 2dr coupe only lasted though '81 model year...everything M-body after that was 4 dr.

It sure sounds like your friend is talking K-car though...

That's the biggest reason it's going up on the rack. I have to agree that bad rust should be an issue. He's smart enough to find that kind of problem. I am more concerned with common serious mechanical problems that would cost more than the car is worth. For example, is it going to be a super pain to replace the valvecover gasket under the turbo stuff? Is there anything in the steering, suspension, engine, trans etc. that goes bad on every one of these? I've never seen under the hood of one of these and don't know what to tell him.

I haven't clarified the year yet but let's assume that it must be a K-car.

I don't doubt for a second that he got the year wrong. He doesn't know any more about any year LeBaron than I do, which is absolutely nothing and the whole point to this thread. So far the only thing I am reading here is that it is a rusty turd without even looking at it. Who knows, maybe the turd came here from Texas last month. Would it still have humongous rust holes? I think I'll leave the rust judgement up to him. He was just concerned about potential mechanical reasons to pass on the car. Me, I wouldn't look twice at this car. Not interested at all. But he likes convertibles and sold his ElDorado and Buick Electra verts a few years ago.

I guess the real question is, can this be a reliable beater or is it a money pit?

Well, I'll admit, it's the 'cool' Mopar style (LOL):

1971/1972 Chrysler B5 "True Blue Metallic" (CM-2401 at CarQuest), Ditzler/PPG code 2306, Sherwin Williams U7-3110 (True Blue Metallic).
