Because gasoline is very hard to suck. If you go bigger on the outlet of your pump, then to get the full benifit, then you need to increase the inlet size.
Any (electric or mechanical)fuel pump for a engine, needs a larger suction line than discharge, no exceptions. Do guys do it differently, yes. Does it make it right NO!
The short distant from the engine mounted fuel pump to the carbs is very short, so 5/16" line will carry the load in most cases. If it's not big enough, then the suction side isn't big enough either. Fuel delivery is my specialty, for a long time now.
