it won't hurt the paint at all if it's real paint with hardener in it. spray bomb, I'm not so sure.

I don't know that WD40 is the best for hood hinges though..it's too thin and will drain out in a short time. good for a quick fix, but not long term. I would try a silicone or lithium type grease, something with some more "stick" to it.
