The smoothe cylinder walls have me curious. Can THIS be partly responsible for oil consumption?
I'm not an engine builder, but of the used factory engines I've disassembled, I'd say yes, you should still have crosshatch after only 3000 miles, and I don't think they smould be smooth or slick. Clean them with a degreaser and see how they feel.
Read this and see what you think of your cylinder walls. Sounds like you might have glazing?
