I had a set of the conversion pushrods on a crane 284 cam and with just a square decking of the block they were almost botteming out all the lifters, it actually ran fine but the plungers were pretty far down.

All the more reason to check before throughin it together. I had my block zero decked. They took aapprox. 0.020" off each side and the conversion push rods barely preloaded the lifter 0.020.

Don't know where the variation engine to engine comes from maybe the bosses on the head the pedastels mount to or the pedastels them selves.

A million different places tolerances can stack up to one extreme or the other, deck height, rocker pad height, gasket thickness, base circle of the cam, height of the lifters from face to cup, exact cam location... all kinds of things so yeah you need to measure it.
