There's a good chance it is already set up for 4 speed - may even have the bronze bushing in place dirty but unworn.

They can be setup for an auto and manual together?

I pulled a 383 from a 68 Newport years ago...original engine. Went to put a bushing into it for my roadrunner and there was already one there...dirty and unused, but there.

Yours stands alot more chance of beeing drilled being a 68 than if it was a later 70's unit, in my experience. If it's drilled to depth and not finish drilled to size (and many were this way) an SKF B287 fits into the torque converter register and takes care of the bushing issue for you.

As previously mentioned, circumcise the input if you have to.
