I know they help keep the cam from walking, and are really important with roller-cams. How important are they with a sizeable solid flat-tappet? (in a BB)

I learned the hard way on my max wedge motor. PUT ONE IN!!! Yes, the lobs are supposed to be cut so as to push the cam towards the back of the block. (the key to that sentence is "supposed") They are cheap, easy to install, you can now get one rollerized, and cheap insurance. Just had a friend go through this with a 496 motor. Name brand flat tappet cam - bounced in and out enough to just be audible. He caught it before it got ugly. Don't take a chance.
