and replace your damaged wires with new ones. taping over them did nothing but "hide" the problem! old wires with insulation that's cracked and fallen off will also have corroded copper under whats left of the insulation. the resistance will be higher, so you will get less voltage flowing through them, and what flow you DO get, will cause excessive heating, causing further damages, up to and including catastrophic electrical fires
