Yeah a cheaper alternative would be to have your local machine shop take a look at the crank and he can grind or polish it for you for only a couple hundred bucks, then do new bearings and you'll have a good bottom end. Then you can deglaze the cylinders with your drill mounted hone, throw in a new set of piston rings and go. Would be a lot cheaper than tearing the whole block down and having all the machining done, etc. Once you start doing boring, block shaving, balancing, rods new or recon'd, cam bearings, hot tanking, etc etc etc the $$$ adds up fast.

Another option is PAW has their rebuilt 440 short block and long blocks on sale for a pretty good deal these days, when you consider they handle all the running around on their end.

FWIW cast 440 cranks are said to be good to around 600 horse.
