Here is a picture of the slip-joint I posted, bottomed out in a 70 E-Body A833 transmission. It sticks out about 2 1/4" from the end of the housing to the center of the u-joint (7290).

It appears that the only thing you get with a shorter u-joint is a shorter stroke and premature dropout.
