Now, before you run off to the DMV, remember that the term "VIN" or vehicle identification number didn't start until much later. Some states and some clerks used different numbers, which is why you want to check the paperwork to make sure it matches. Some places used the engine number. Most used the serial number that is on a tag on the driver's or passenger's front door jamb.
The big tag under the hood is NOT it.
