I had mine mounted right behind my shifter. Manual ball valve. NHRA chassis inspector didn’t like it, but said there were no rules against it. He said we let nitrous bottles and mechanical oil pressure gauges in the car, and thought that wasn’t a god idea either.
As far as distance… there is no difference in reaction. fluids don’t compress, so as long as there is oil in the line it will react immediately.
