When pulling out my distributor and intermediate shaft, I find it easiest to take a quick pic with my cell phone to determine the clocking for easy reference to put it back together. One can also use a sharpie to mark the dist. base to the intake or block so it'll fire right up.  I do that too! LOL! Sometimes I even get motivated and use a punch to mark them because I've had Sharpie rub off. I do that all the time, the sharpie works better for me because a little brake cleaner and a rag will erase it.
