When I search for an older post, say something from a year ago, I get nothing. I put my user name in and left it at everything less than 2 years ago and I only get results going back ~6 months. What am I doing wrong?
Sounds like you are looking for one of your old posts. Go to your profile page and click on the 'Show Posts' button. It lists all of your posts back to 2003. Thousands of them.

However, this won't work for ads, or old posts in the General forum, though. Ads get deleted, and General forum posts get purged long before those in other forums.
