I take plenty of pictures. I make sure I have a wiring diagram and then I go to unwrapping the "tape". Everything under the wrap should be clean. What is not clean I use mineral spirits to remove the grease and then wash it all in soapy water. After everything is clean and inspected I wrap it back the way I found it. It is not as big a job as it appears at first.
