It seems the second generation Grand Cherokees, WJ, have a reputation for rear shocks to start thumping around after the OEM dampeners are replaced with aftermarket units. Common fix is to replaced the factory stepped bolts with a straight shank M12x1.75. Tried this in mine with no success. Even with the consistent shank diameter, there is <1mm of play between the
bolt and bushing that allows the clunking to continue as the suspension cycles. As a temp fix, I wrapped a layer of duct tape around the stock bolts to absorb the hit. Its working so far but eventually will get pounded out and the clunking will return.

Anyone found a successful and consistent fix for this? I've seen a few kits out there, but they are simply a steel sleeve with the aforementioned M12x1.75 full shank bolts. My replacement shocks already have a steel sleeve.
