In some cases they`re a restriction for one and some have stated it`s better to have the jet in the metering block where it belongs and have the fuel volume/weight forcing fuel into the jet as opposed to being at the end. Mark on here can probably explain it better and I`ve see some of the high-end carbs now using the sleeves instead of the screw ins......... thumbs
