Stripped axle or ring gear, doesn't matter. The engine/driveshaft rpm instantly went high when the axles stripped...it still "freewheeled".
With stripped axles, the driveshaft wouldn't stop when the car did if there was enough RPM on the motor to power through it. There has to be something connecting the driveshaft to the tire...in this case, the axles were not, so the spool kept spinning but the axles didn't.
