I run a 440-source pan. It hangs low, but its never been an issue because I usually watch where I'm going and I'm fairly careful with my car. It's got a couple of dings here & there, I have assumed from rocks bouncing along the roadway, but never have I had an issue with destroying it.

If you drive it like you stole it, you may want to go to a road-race style pan.
