What is the best method for checking intake to head alignment? Heads were milled .006. Does the intake need anything done to it so it will seal properly? Is it best just to use the steel valley pan for head to intake seal?

Call Cometic and ask them what bore size and thickness gasket you need to reach your compression ratio goal with your current specs. Sorry for not getting back on this post sooner I'm not sure if you know the problems with Cometics sealing on rough block and head surfaces, they leak if the sealing surfaces are not real smooth, 50 RA or smoother My message is to make sure your heads and blocks are smooth enough to use Cometics before assembling your motor
As far as intake to head port alignment set the heads on and torque them down once your ready for the final asembly on them, then set the intake on the heads with no vally pan and see if you can look down the ports to see how the intake and heads align, if you can't see down them then take the manifold off and mark the heads and manifold port levels on both the top and bottom of the heads and manifold on the ends and then set the intake back on see how your marks align It is better for the intake ports to be slightly smaller(1/16 to 1/4 inch per side ) than the ports in the heads are, you do not want the manifold ports bigger than the head ports, EVER Shoot for the top of the intake ports to be aligned or slightly lower than the roof of the head ports, same thing on the sides and floor of the ports, have the head ports be wider and taller than the intake ports are If they are exactly the same size and align perfectly then you are truly blessed Once you see what you got take the time to use a feeler gauge to see how much clearances you have between the intake and heads, check all four corners, both the top and bottom sides of the heads and intake Write the numbers down and see if it is wider on the top or not, if so have the intake manifold machine so it is not wider at the top, I like to see between .0010 to .0030 wider at the top than the bottom on all four corners If you get that then plan on using at least one fiber gasket between the intake valley pan and the heads You do not want your motor to suck oil into the intake manifold from the intake lifter valley Good luck, have fun and let us know how you do and how it ends up and the effort needed to reach your goals
