This is such an easy problem to solve !

The reason either wears is because they are similar netals - both being bronze. Its a law of physics that two similar metals in a friction situation will cause one or both surfaces to wear.

So to solve the problem you put a thin steel shim between the two and kiss the problem goodbye.

Now the thinnest shim I've found is a torrington bearing thrust washer that is .030" thick so I have the bottom shoulder on the gear taken off (approx. .030) on a lathe.
