Try loosening the bolts that hold the case together, then try again. That will unload some of the spring force (assuming its a cone type). About the only way this gets out of whack is its put together the first time after re-assembly and an axle is not installed to line them up. Can you try to pry the axle/spyder gear to get it to line up? But put an axle in the lined up side other wise it will move too. Just don't exert enough force to knock a tooth off.
