Even with the oil smell if you're sure it ain't leaking anywhere externally I suspect an intake gasket went bad. Which will not show up on a compression test as it only checks the sealing of the long block but a broken ring tho unlikely but that could show up on a compression test depending on which ring. big or small block. did the fluctuating idle/stumble show up at the same time it started burning oil?
