I tend to agree with this statement. A properly made fiberglas product will retain its shape even in hot sun (Corvettes !!!). This was likely made with no lips on the edges or any support to speak of so it was just like a piece of paper - free to flex as it pleased. Even being taken out of the mold too soon would have an adverse affect. There are still cheapo hoods and other products being made and sold today as "lightweight". However, a quality manufactured product can still be light and structurally stable.
