Here once again is a guy with a decent plan and everyone starts telling him to spend some more money or hinting that he didn't make good choices.

In my book, the only bad choice is the ported iron heads. But maybe the horsepower they'll allow is enough for his goals? Or maybe he has a set of aftermarket iron heads?
