I ran a vented fuel cap on my satellite for years. I put a 73 tank into my 74. The venting system was totally different for 74 vs 73 so I just bought an el cheapo plastic locking vented fuel cap. Never had a problem and never leaked fuel.
That don't make it right or even OK. I wouldn't want my gas tank vented to the atmosphere nowadays with all the ethanol that is in gasoline nowadays that absorbs water readily.
