Vin SHOULD be on the bellhousing flange as that was standard for 68 , but you would have to look to see if the engine has the machined pad first .

The auto trans never had the VIN stamped on the pan rail , it moved from the bellhousing flange to a raised pad that was cast on the passenger side of the transmission bellhousing area.
