i did exactly this a few years ago. i will say that i didnt spend enpugh time working on my float, as my gauge isnt exactly right. in my a body, i have a 16 gallon tank. at empty, i only put in 12 gallons.
so yes, it can be done. mine was done with a pair of bolts, as that is what the sender was assembled with from autometer.
