This was my idea as well. The transmission seamed ok when I parked the car four years ago. I think just a fluid/screen change and belt adjustment. Its been a while since I've done this stuff.

To the other posters, I just picked up a hoist a few hours ago, and it came with one of thoses levelers. I hadn't even heard of this piece before, so thank you for passing the knowledge. I already have a friend lined up to help with the removal. Thanks for all the advice, I think were gonna try to remove both together.
I'm going to post again when I'm ready for some ideas for holding the engine and trans while seperating. Wood blocks and tires will probably be fine though.
