Intelligent people can disagree, but...

a quick disconnect such as pictured can be done on either the positive side (in my experience, the more common location) OR on the negative side.

What might be confusing for some people is the absolute rule when wrenching off battery connections. In that case, you always undo the negative first and reconnect it last, so that you cannot inadvertently do a dead short between a ground point and the positive post of a fully connected battery.

(This all assumes you are not working on an ancient British car with positive earth.)
