Your wires probably aren't as bad as they seem. They clean up reall nice with a non-polar solvent like laquer thinner after a quick and light pass with a soapy sponge (don't hose it down). Just go over it, make sure your contacts are as clean as possible (wire brush if possible). After cleaning up wires and bead blasting/ painting the frame, there's not that much to it except patience. Collor Correct sells the proper suede finish paint.

If you really do get frustrated, feel free to set it on fire and start over.
